Picasso! The Greatest Artist of all Time


Picasso, 1881-1977- Picasso had many artistic periods throughout his lifetime. He studied art under his father who was an art instructor and as a young boy painted masterpeices. Throughout his artistic career. He created over 20,000 peices of art and he changed his style throughout his lifetime. He surpassed his fathers artistic ability by the time he was 13.

The Blue Period 1901- 1904 The Blue Period represented a depressed and somber period of his life. He often painted using blue and green tones. This period may have been attributed to the death of his friend Carlos Casagamas and his trip through Spain. He depicted sad portraits of beggers and gaunt mothers with their children. This period also suggests his style as a symbolic or figuarative painter.

Rose Period 1905-1907

The Rose Period was a described for his works in which he used pink and organe tones. He often depicted subject matter such as harlequins and circus folks. This period also suggests his happiness when he began his relationship with another artist and love. This is thought to be the period which marks the end of the development in which finds his style as a figurative painter. In the Rose Period you see his style has a classical look however, his subtle line indicates his expressionistic style.

This is interesting to art historians because he combines classical art with expressionism. This period, which may not be as popular as the art in the Blue Period, is significant for developments in his art style.

African-Influenced Period 1907-1909

The Black Period was considered to be the time period between the Rose Period and Cubism Period. Modernist Artist such as Picasso, Henri Matisse Edouard Manet, Paul Cezanne and Paul Gauguin were inspired by traditional African Sculpture which resulted in African-stylized facial features on his paintings that were also stylized toward the cubism period. This period was brief but notable in art history. His painting Les Demoiselles d'Avignon depicted the facial features exhibited in the African sculpture.

Analytic and Synthestic Cubism 1908-1918

The main concept behind cubism is that the artist takes the natural form and interprets it into a simplistic geometrical shape on a two-dimentional plane. Cubism was founded by Picasso and his friend Georges Braques. This period was mostly monochromatic using grey, blues and orche tones and loosly translated into anything realistic. Although his buddy Braques took a more figurative approach to Cubism. You can see how Picasso's original figurative style has morphed into a more abstract form of art. However, he will continue on with more figurative paintings later on in his career​.

Neo-Classical ans Surrealism 1919-1929

After WWI he began painting in the neo-classical style which many artists of that time did that brought art back to the classical style. It was also during this time that Picasso was also thought to be apart of the surrealist art movement because his cubist style art like the painting The Three Musicians could be considered an avoidance of conscious intention while performing or creating art. Cubism was considered surreal.

What we took away from out Picasso lesson

Picasso is a very complex artist to study. His style varried throughout his career and he was a very diverse artist. Picasso knew his models and subject very well and he practiced his cubism through his portraiture.

He liked to study his subjects and take out the third dimensional element and place all features on a two dimensional plane. Here you can see the faces are divided and the eyes are present with each having a different perspective. Same goes for the nostrils and lips.

In our K-3rd grade lesson we played the game roll-a-picasso where the students rolled the dice and the number that landed corresponded to one out of six eye designs and they had to draw that on their paper. They would re-roll until all features were drawn on their paper. They also got to practice making papier mache ballons which we used to make Picasso masks in our final lesson.

Our fourth through sixth graders learned how to make papier mache balloons for our final masks for both classes. We pasted layers of newspaper to small balloons which set to dry. The final Picasso lesson resulted in some fun and funky picasso faces. I let the kids liberally design and paint their masks! What fun!
